Need suggestions for Post Partem Depression

Post by McPhee Family »

This is a woman who has had 3 children and PPD following all three. Has had a 4th - had homeopathy throughout her pregnancy. Pregnancy was uneventful and had a healthy homebirth. Baby is doing great, nursing well, sleeping well, etc. Three weeks post partum this Monday.
Mom is very *afraid* of not being able to sleep (her main symptom) with the PPD in the past. She has a great day with no problems but as evening approaches she starts getting fearful. She said she is terrified she won't be able to sleep. Then she gets a knot in her stomach and it brings on diarrhea. She feels random burning in her back, neck, and arms. She had some watery greenish diarrhea. She has issues with not wanting to fail or let people down but she says it is more about being judged. She does not want to be judged. And so now she is worried that everyone is watching her for PPD and she doesn't want to be judged for it.
It is really more a fear of becoming depressed or not being able to sleep rather than feeling depressed that is creating the anxiety.
Initially Cocculus helped, she slept well but then made her feel down. Then Ignatia helped - she slept well with no problems. Then she aggravated with a dissimilar symptom. Then Mag Carb helped her sleep with no problem but she felt down the next day. Last night Arsenicum aggravated her badly and she felt like she didn't sleep at all and also had depressive thoughts which she hadn't had before. Today she feels overwhelmed and fearful. She feels like she is psyching herself out.
Pulsatilla and Sepia were the two remedies that helped her throughout her pregnancy. However, I'm not quite sure I see either in the symptoms now.
She is consulting with her midwife for help as well. Wondering if anything jumps out at anyone. She talks a good deal about being fearful.
Thanks!
Truly,
Erica

Interesting case.

I notice Verat came up high in the analysis – can you see that remedy for this person? The fear of being judged could well fit into the Verat fear of losing social position.

It may be a simple Gels case if her problems are focussed around a nervous anticipation and fear of not being able to function properly without a decent, refreshing sleep. This can easily lead to states of insomnia and physical and mental exhaustion down the track, which your patient is fully aware of. All normal fears and anxieties are exaggerated when we're exhausted or full of anticipation, and oversensitive to other peoples' expectations. The greenish diarrhoea is also indicative of Gels, as is the inability to turn off the mind,("uncontrollable thinking" - Boericke) when trying to fall asleep.
Hope useful,
Chris

Would help greatly, maybe mistaken in that thought, if we knew some food and thirst modalities.
Great to follow the suggestions.

Only if the person's symptoms match sepia's symptom picture.
There are many many remedies that it could be.
