Help with my kitten please!

Hi I'm new here, I have no kids but 3 cats and 2 horses so will be
asking veterinary questions only! I use homoeopathy a lot but only
simple stuff, and am lucky enough to have a homoeopathic vet
available. I hope this site will assist me though and save me a few
bills.
My kitten is 10 weeks old and today has diahhorea (I can't spell
it)although he is otherwise fit and healthy and running about. Can
anyone suggest a remedy to try before I panic and call the vet? He
really has no symptoms, he doesn't seem in pain and easily gets to the
litter tray to squit, he is off his food though. He is still running
around like a maniac so difficult to guess symptoms to look up.

If you're going to try to do some homeopathic prescribing on your own, you
need to get some study materials. For people, I would recommend Boericke's
Pocket Manual, but for veterinary purposes, I'm not sure what the best
"first" resource would be. Any suggestions out there?

there are a few homeo-vet books that are inexpensive.
they are very beginner level but can offer some good hints.

you can get them through amazon.com or minimumbooks.com
or from homeopathy education services.
but do make sure you have some materia medica to study
any remedies that these books might suggest.

You can give your Kitten Acidophilus one capsule sprinkled on some food. That usually resolves any kind of stomach problem - before you get into Homeopathy remedies for which you would have to give much more information. Acidophilus you can purchase in any drugstore.

Cats can't use acidophilus (it needs milk and cats are lactose
intolerant).
use bifidus or other suitable ones - a good product is Forti-flora by
Purina.

Also add rice bran for the probiotics to eat, and a little cooked
pumpkin for the carotene in an easy to absorb method.

the thing about these books is that they talk about the different conditions
and offer some understanding/insight into what a person is dealing with.
i am not a big fan of these books in lieu of a good reperatory, but i have
found them useful on different occasion inconjuction with full 'human' refs.

There are better ways to get understanding of the illnesses
themselves, which is all one needs to make use of a proper repertory.
For example Merck Veterinary Manual has all animal illnesses well
described on the internet - and one can add latest research at
PubMed, and a google will usually come up with general descriptions
as well.

The little vethom books are seriously misleading for anything but the
simplest first aid.
I've tossed mine all - they were not worth giving away.
The reason is the MISinformation in them. There is far too much of
it, and the newcomer has no way to tell what is good info and what is
misinformation (however well meant when it was written!)

If I had a little kit who was running around as usual, playing
energetically, no symptoms except non-urgent diarrhea and off his food,
I'd just figure it was a mild bug, no worries. Also no symptoms (at
least in what's presented) to prescribe on. Is the situation any
different with a kitten--I mean mainly, is it more worrisome in a
kitten than in a child?

(My little bits of animal prescribing have all been done by using the
regular human books; the challenge comes in knowing what's *normal* for
the age and situation of that *species*, and then translating that into
human terms.)
