Taking Vitamins
We obtain the vitamins from the food or sunlight etc that we absorb.
If our absorption system is not well tuned (as part of our disease) then we will have extra symptoms showing lack of vitamins.
This can obviously be addressed in two way:
1- Attend to the fundamental cause
2- Remove the shortage by an extra intake.
But excess vitamins themselves can cause symptoms.
(Should you require some of these let me know on finrod@finrod.co.uk and I will send you my chart given by Sheilagh Creasy.)
The danger of taking excess of vitamins normally arises when the synthetic forms of these vitamins are taken.
So to protect yourself and get an idea about it, translate 1000 mg of Vit C to the number of Oranges or litres of orange juice - Or in case of Vitamin A to the number of carrots.
Do you think you can eat that many oranges or carrots in one sitting then it may be worth consideration - else I think a big mistake may be being made because the extra burden put on organs like the liver (who could already be compromised). It becomes more fun in the case multivitamin tablets!

Re: Taking Vitamins
another thing to add (and this may have already been discussed since i
havent read most of what was being said about Vit - so i appologize
for redundancy if thats so...) is that not all vit are the same. some
are water soluble and some are fat soluble which are toxic to the body
if taken at higher then needed quantities (which often happens when a
multivitamin is taken along side other separate vit such as Vit C, etc)...

Re: Taking Vitamins
I respectfully disagree with a number of points in this offtopic
discussion
1. We no longer obtain full nutrient value from our foods for a
number of reasons. Selective breeding (long before genetic
modification) was used by farmers to produce heartier crops that grew
in a wider variety of climates, were suitable for machine planting
and harvesting, could withstand transport to market, and met
the `taste' requirements of the modern consumer. NO selective
breeding of crops has been done to increase or even maintain the
nutritional value of the foods on any marketable agricultural scale.
Processing and/or long transport time spans from harvest to table
have significantly decreased the nutritive value of the foods we eat.
The soils no longer contain the full range of components necessary to
produce foods with full nutritive values they once had. The new move
toward `green' or `organic' farming is wonderful for so many reasons,
but it can not replace the nutrient values lost over the
decades/centuries of farming. Unless virgin land is brought under
cultivation, or the soil is renewed by the natural cycles of
flooding, siltation, glaciations, vegetative procession, etc., no
amount of cow manure and earthworm castings will fully renew the
original nutrient content of our soils.
Of course the above points do not even begin to consider the
stripping, processing, storage, and poor combining problems once the
foods reach a kitchen.
The above points also do not take into account the wide variety of
absorption problems we see today, or the excessive nutrient
requirements from modern stresses.
2. Certain supplemental nutrients taken in high quantities without
the co-factors required for their normal utilization have been shown
to be very useful in emergency situations. Unbalanced high doses of
any substance (food, supplement, etc.) seems inexcusable as a long
term healing approach by any natural health professional (including
homeopaths) that seeks to help the body in finding it's balance and
so heal itself.
3. Synthetic supplements are almost always simply an additional
toxin the body must handle. They cause many health problems. They
are in many of the prepared foods and should be avoided just as you
would avoid aspertane. At least when you open a box of cereal with
those synthetic vitamins sprayed on the flakes – you can smell them –
and know to avoid those products.
4. Recommending any `number' of units of ANY nutritional supplement
without understanding the status, background, and needs of the
individual is an allopathic approach – and I hope would not be
promoted by homeopaths.
I just returned from the health food store where a clerk was telling
a customer to take a specific homeopathic remedy 5 times a day (5
pills at a time) for 2 to 3 weeks to get rid of her psoriasis. He
also told the woman to take an unbelievable amount of vitamin C every
day for that time. Please note – he did not `take her case'. Both
he recommended because of a posting on a list similar to this one
promised this was the cure and these were the numbers needed to do
it.
If you intend to recommend supplements to your clients – please take
the time to study them as seriously and carefully as you have studied
homeopathy. A list discussion should spur your study – not provide
a single prescription – just as you would use it to spur study of
possible remedies – not use it as a source for THE prescription for a
particular symptom, disease, syndrome, etc. without any
understanding of the INDIVIDUAL. There are some on this list with
years of research and study, they usually provide excellent
information. However others are re-iterating junk from the popular
gurus, magazines, etc.

So intelligent supplements are necessary rather than optional to even
enjoy minimal health.
Excess vitamins are excreted, by pathways developed along with our
basic metabolism (unlike trying to excrete drugs for example, which
needds kidney and liver special functions and chemistry) so there is
no problem talking them - there's a lot more problem from deficiency.
Excess supplementing is very hard to do though it is more easy to
get an imbalance of those that go together - so like any health care
area, it needs a touch of knowledge and intelligence to apply.
The more that is applied, the better it can enhance health. For
example in Dr Rozencwajg's superb new book, Organotherapy, Drainage,
and Detoxification, this book is so thorough on all the ways to do
this, it includes a section on foods that help specific organs etc.
That helps too - but we still need to supplement specifics in an
individualized way - as we do with drainage or homeopathy or exercise
or food.
Even a well tuned system can not get its OPTIMUM supply of nutrients
in the modern world.
So everyone needs to supplement (wisely), not just in cases of
specific pathology (or we will end up with those pathologies!).
Not realistically.
It is only if you are VASTLY out of line with what you supplement,
that you can induce symptoms of excess. But we nearly ALL have
symptoms of deficiency.
That is too broad a statement to have meaning.
If we take synthetic forms of OIL soluble vitamins - then it is
possible to have problems, but thosde are hardly ever sold these days
as the geenral pubnlic knows to avoid synthetic oil solubles. I can
not find synthetic Vit D forr esamnpe - it is all the natural D3 form
these days.
Only Vit K is still readily available as synthetic form (K3) and that
is because they do not know how to arrange to make supplements using
K1 or K2 natural forms.
Again on Vit A and D - most people are getting this from fish oils,
not from synthetic ones.
However when it comes to water soluble ones the synthetic forms are
BETTER for many people as the lack the allergens that accompany
natural extracts.
In my case for example I can make good use of any amount of ascorbic
acid that isw NOT an extract but that is manufactured to exacting
standards and high purity, with no additives.
The body is *designed* to excrete excess water soluble vitamins in
excess of uses. In fact if we still were in the garden of eden we
would always taken in excess, and excrete the rest - it;'s a safety
feature so we do not go short.
We are *supposed* to err on the side of caution - and are designed
for it - thus to take in MORE than we need, to ensure we do not go
short is a design feature of humans.
With respect that has noting to do with getting the right amount of a
vitamin.
When you take 1000mg of Vit C as a supplement you do NOT get all the
inflammatory sugar in the orange juice. If you did take it as orange
juice you would get sicker with free radicals not healthier from vit C.
The point of supplement concentrates is to supplement what is needed
WITHOUT the stuff that is not needed.
You seem to have forgotten that shipped in vegetables and fruits lose
half their Vit C every day, and that the average person can only buy
them after 2 weeks. The fruit and veg does NOT lose its inflammatory
sugar - just the Vit C. So we NEED to put it back into the nutrient
chain. We can not afford to live in a dream world - this is real
world. Food we buy is not rich in nutrients - and instead of needing
what wouLD be in them if we could get them fresh - ewe actually need
MORE detox ability as we have air pollution, radikoWAVE pollution,
water pollution, stress damage "pollution" and on an on - all needing
vitamin as components of detox. Mainly those detox vitamins are Vit C
and E.
Sadly too, recent studies reported that today’s "fresh" fruits and
vegetables are lower in certain vitamins and minerals than
they were as little as 50 years ago. These studies compared nutrient
data from as early as 1934 to as recent as 1995, for the U.S. and
Canada. For example, two peaches would have supplied a woman’s
vitamin A RDA in 1951. Today, she would have
to eat almost 53 peaches to meet this requirement!
Why exactly isd not clear - partly it is that varieties arfe produced
that do not deteriorate as easily in transport etc - but that leads
to les nutrients - partly it is soul depletion of nutrients - and
there's a long list.
Bottom line - we can NOT get nutrients from "fresh" food no mater how
we look at it.
So we NEED to get educated on how to supplement wisely.
19 oranges is NOT as sensible as 1000mg of ascorbic acid. We do NOT
need the glycation from the 190mg of sugar that accompanies the
oranges. We DO need the Vit C.
There is very little vitamin A in carrots (maybe 800 units in a
large fresh one), you refer to carotene I presume. We can convert a
little of that to Vit A if we are healthy enough - which is why
people who drink a lot of carrot juice go orange. That is not from
Vit A
Fish oil from fish liver oil is a good supplement for Vit A.
Carotene in carrots, comes with 5g of inflammatory sugar per carrot.
Hence - the eye and lung protection from polluted air and and an
earth with a hole in the ozone layer to cause harm from too much UV
in the sunshine -NEEDS extra Vit A for fighting against this damage.
What's missing is enough visual purple (which we make from Vit A) -
not an orange skin full of carotene. So we need to be smart about
where we get the Vit A we NEED and not get sugar and carotene excess
that we do not need.
The liver only has a burden if you use oranges and carrots to get
EXTRA vitamins needed, as those have digestion issues needing the
liver. There is nothing toxic to be detoxed when we take in vitamin
supplements. Our bodies are designed to naturally use them - or to
excrete excess WITHOUT CHEMICAL CHANGES to them - so thus without
involvement of organs like the liver. It's how the metabolism works;
it's how we are designed.
Excess Vit C (as ascorbic acid) is excreted as ascorbic acid -
exactly as it is ingested - there is NO work from the organs needed:-)
Sensible multi-vitamins are designed to take the arithmetic out of
vitamin balance issues.
AND to ensure supplements of ALL the things missing in "fresh" food
these days.
For example the body excretes B1, B2 and B6 in a specific ratio. This
means that if you supplement only one of them, you MAY after a while
get short on the other two. (You will start getting mosquito bites
as a clue)
SO if you have a deficiency of say B6 (as most people do, it is a
nerve nutrient depleted under ANY form of stress) then it is fine to
supplement the B6, as long as you also take a balanced tablet with
all three as well - to ensure there is no deficiency of B1 and B2, if
you need to excrete any excess B6.
Similarly - calcium and magnesium are connected and it is "dumb" to
take calcium, without also taking magnesium.
So more and more, the tablets come in more convenient formulas, as a
group.
Another reason is the need for one nutrient to absorb another. They
just work together.
SO we all need to supplement vitamins for one or more above reasons -
and there are good ways to do it.
It is like walking with blinkers on to pretend that vitamins should
or could all come from food these days.
Even for healthy people
The facts of nutrient composition of "fresh food" and of
environmental conditions prove otherwise.
Of corse the drug companies will fill your ears and eyes with
propaganda to make you leave out supplements to get/stay healthy, and
make you instead get sick and need drugs......

Re: Taking Vitamins
Not true. (But a typical drug company propaganda story)
The oil soluble vitamins can be toxic in excess but you'd have to
take ridiculous amounts for a long time to get toxic.
Not just two or ten supplements.
Let's be specific:
Vit D is oil soluble.
We need 10,000 units a day. That is in fact the amount we make EACH
DAY by exposing 25% of skin to sun for 15 minutes or more each day.
(the body stops making it after it gets 10,000 for the day.
The average supplement has 200 or 400 units.
So if you take 400 unit tablets, and you "double up" on them you'd be
getting 800 units.
You'd need to take 25 doses a day just to get what your body makes
normally.
So who is going to get toxic? Do yo know anyone who takes 25 of their
vitamain pills a day?
If so - they are actually getting enough D!!!
NOT too much D:-)
To get toxic needs many times that amount for many months:-)
So all the hype about getting toxic is not even worth talking about.
As usual - the truth is in the details - in the real numbers.
Not the scare tactics
It takes MANY months of too much Vit D to get even a little bit toxic.
My doctor has wised up on Vitamin D by the way. There's no sunshine
to speak of here to get it naturally, and so I get Vit D on
prescription at the current standard Rx amount which is a single
tablet weekly of D3 containing 50,000 units.
I'm expected to get the other 20,000 units I need per week, from food
or weak sun
The "side effect" of this is that my immune system has some raw
materials to work with:-)
(Vit D is mainly used by the immune system).

Namaste,
Irene

Which Rx brand of D3 are you using?

Re: Taking Vitamins
you can buy d3 at 2500 iu's so getting an adequate amount is not difficult.
i was doing some muscle testing to adjust my dosage. during the summer
when i garden a lot i dropped my dosage in half and will up it shortly as we
get shorter and cooler days.
it never ceases to amaze me how the corporate spin is used to diminish
us with misinformation and poor quality products. i guess if we had as much
time/money to hire spin meisters full time, we could wage an adequate
fight back.

Re: Taking Vitamins
While good nutrition is important it is interesting to think it is not the be all and end all.
Has anybody seen the UK 'Eataholics' television programs. Rather than being about overeating, the program mainly dealt with dysfunctional eating. A psychologist and dietician tried to change the eating habits of people who had survived on severely restricted diets since childhood.
I can remember one person who had eaten nothing except cheese and potato crisps, morning, lunch and tea, since infancy. His aversion to other food was so strong that he would retch if it was placed anywhere near his mouth. He did not take supplements and yet in his 30's (I think) was still leading an actiive and healthy life when obviously, he should not have been.
And his story was not an isolated one. One young women was on a similar diet but looked the picture of health and vitality - healthier than the psychologist and dietician who were trying to help her. I think her medical investigations revealed that she only had mild anaemia. Such an appearance and results should have been impossible, and if we are just to think in nutritional terms she should have been dead within 3 - 6 months of starting such a restrictive diet. Instead, many years later, she was still looking the picture of health.
The thing that amazed me is that people who had not had a piece of fruit or vegetable pass their lips for decades were still alive - there was no scurvy and just on appearance, they were looking remarkably good. This should have been impossible. Obviously the state of a person's vitality, or vital force, is still more important than nutrition. While poor nutrition can weaken a vital force over time, a strong vital force seems to be able to resist evewn severe nutritional deficiencies that, if we were just relying on biochemical processes alone, should see us dead.
Life and health is about more than just nutrition.

Re: Taking Vitamins
While I agree with your premise that nutrition is not the 'be all and
end all' - I completely disagree with the conclusion drawn from the
examples given. Restrictive diets do not 'kill' in a matter of
months - otherwise no one would have survived wars, famine,
concentration camps, etc. Overall, the human system is amazing in
it's ability to adapt and make chemical substitutions. The vital
force plays a role that we will never quantify but must certainly
recognize (and stand in awe of). However, nutritional deprevation is
now common place from reduced nutrition in the basic food supply,
unnecessary junk food, processed food, fad diets, etc. on top of
typical modern society stresses not to mention the environmental
stresses, and add on the factors of modern medical pollution/damage.
Survival in youth is certainly possible (if it were not the human
race would have died out long ago) but it surfaces in later years in
a host of problems. And it surfaces quickly in the children of these
individuals. I am currently working with a case of 3 year old twins -
from parents of exceptionally poor nutrition (by choice not
necessity) - the mother will still not eat any vegetable or fruit.
The cascade of problems generated under these conditions makes me
weep.
No, nutrition is not the ONLY factor, but it is an important factor
and should not be easily dismissed because someone 'looks the picture
of health'.
