Soy
Has there been a proving of Soybean? I haven't heard of it being
done and it would be very important with all it's negative affects - -
especially for vegetarians, being a dominant infant formula (which
unfortunately my oldest had) and in a bazillion products now.
There are stirrings of better awareness of it not only not being
healthy as advertised, but harmful and hard to even avoid. Mercola had
a lot to say, see link:

Re: Soy
Oooh, yeah. And wouldn't it be fun to compare provings of an "old
fashioned" type of soybean, with one of the recent GM varieties!?

I have been using Soy products for my clients and myself for many years and still believe the benefits far outweigh the bad aspects. Everyday someone is doing a new study to try and discredit all natural products. Do not believe everything you read. The real research is not as stated on Mercola. Kathy

Re: Soy
No it's worse.
I'm not a Mercola fan - I use real research:
Soy is cheap junk leftovers from farming - NOT some good natural
product - and they want to sell it somewhere - but what it does to
your immune system (there is plenty of research) - the skewing to
Th-2 to damage the thymus and predispose chronic disease - is enough
to make sure I never touch it and I recommend strongly against it.

Re: Soy
Hi Kathleen,
Some of the concern about soy is based on factors such as the hugely
increased *amounts* that some people now are using--soy milk, soy
burgers, tofu in so very many forms, soy oil, and "soy protein isolate"
in so many products--which is entirely different from anything that's
been done historically (far different from the frequently mentioned
"soy eating cultures"). Another big concern is that most of the soy
crop now is genetically modified, and there are so many unknowns
there.
I'm curious what amounts and types of soy your clients tend to use, and
whether you feel any concern over the *large* amounts that are now
popular in some circles?
(It's also a very common allergen, but I'm sure you are alert to that
possibility.)
Best wishes,
Shannon

Re: Soy
on a more anecdotal level, soy has been touted in the west based
on the health of the japanese who use soy. however, that culture
uses soy in a fermented form, primarily; ie soy sauce or tempeh.
and if when they use it as a regular type food, it is in very small
quantities.
agribusiness latched onto soy as an easy to grow product which
can be used as a cheap filler in many foods. that industry now
promotes eating 8 oz of soy, minimum, per day. it is all about
marketing and corporate interests--the bottom line.
but it has become almost impossible to avoid soy today, it is in
so many products. and vegetarians have latched onto it as a
main source of protein so we now have a problem of once
again undoing a popular myth/belief system.

Re: Soy
The only concern I would have with soy is the genistein which might produce too much estrogen type of hormone in some people. Two of my babies were fed soy formula due to lactose intolerance and I at that time was also vegetarian and consumed lots of soy and I have nice big healthy boys with not too much estrogen or growth problems.
I have changed my view point on some of its uses, I don’t recommend it first but I don’t believe it is harmful when used as a formula or in moderation. I have had great success with PMS and Menopausal complaints when using soy based products. It all comes down to everything in moderation. The population hears something is good for you and that is all they consume.
I personally would try a goat milk over soy now but that is after years of schooling and learning I did not have when my babies were little. The benefits in my mind for soy isolates far outweigh the bad. Heart dis-ease, some forms of cancer, menopause etc. can all be helped with addition of soy. I have a soy shake every morning and honestly my PMS is much better than when I don’t consume any. As far as allergens go in my experience that has not been the case with any one of my clients.
Back to the lady with concerns I would not look to proving soy bean but more towards the estrogen effects of the over consumption of soy. Our food sources pose a much greater risk to our health than too much soy in food. Try antibiotics, irradiation, genetically altered etc. the list is long and very concerning.

Re: Soy
That is your opinion Irene. I don’t agree. It is not a replacement for other “healthy” things but is not a junk leftover. Please give me the link to the damage thymus and predisposition to chronic disease research, I would defiantly like to read that. For every bad research article there are 3 good. Soy has been used for centuries and I can find many more things leading to chronic disease than soy. I grew up on farms and soy is very beneficial to the earth you farm on. Kathy

Re: Soy
soy may have some soil benefits, but that doesn't translate into a human
health benefit. i am sure you know this.
the reading i have done indicates that fermented soy is/may be beneficial,
but not the unfermented bean.
here is a list of articles from mercola that you might read
http://www.mercola.com/article/soy/index.htm
there are several articles that highlight the soy-thryroid problem. some of the articles
reference studies in recognized nutritional and medical journals.
