Detached/detaching retinas
Detached/detaching retinas
Dear all,
Has anyone ever helped (or been helped) with this one? I saw some posts on ABCHomeopathy saying Gelsimium helped, have found flashing and floaters under eyes in Kent (phos and argent nit are two prominent rems). Other experience? Why the heck does it even happen in the first place (other than impact damage)? Many thanks. Margaret in Boston

Just a suggestion for 'Why the heck does it even happen in the first
place (other than impact damage)': in such cases, you may find that
people 'misuse' their eyes, regarding 'the way of seeing things/judging
things'. Distrust and doubt about what they 'see'. Seeing isn't a one
way street. And you could argue that as a result, the retina's are told,
or are 'considered', to be malfunctioning, get neglected, and give up.
Speculative, but maybe not entirely.

Re: Detached/detaching retinas
i have just discovered that my cat has this condition.
the vet claimed that high blood pressure puts undo
pressure on the retinas. i don't know if this is the
same for other mammals; ie, humans.

Dear Hennie,
The patient is very suspicious. But it is hard to jump to conclusions. It seems in her case the connective tissue is being undermined, not the nerve tissue.
Best,
Ellen

Re: Detached/detaching retinas
That is one possible cause.
People with strong myopia are also at higher risk, because of the more
sharply enlongated shape of the eyeball.

That doesn't sound quite right, Shannon. Myopia is short-sightedness, which means a short focal length, or a short distance front-to-back. Farsightedness requires an elongation. I'm no opthalmologist, but this is how cameras work, and my own very nearsighted eyes.

Re: Detached/detaching retinas
Hi Ginny,
Frankly this isn't an area where I've managed (or tried, really) to
keep it all straight, but--
My remark was based on what every opthomologist I see (I am very
nearsighed) keeps telling me--and I googled up this:
www.sightwise.org/
"5% of very nearsighted people (over 6 Diopter correction) will
experience a retinal detachment in their lifetime.
40 to 50 % of retinal detachment patients are nearsighted/shortsighted
(myopic).
Click here to see this reference paper
Your risk of detached retina increases:
1.If you are very nearsighted. ... "
My understanding always had to do with an elongated eyeball, but I'm
not going to google that just now.
Best wishes,
Shannon

Re: Detached/detaching retinas
I think Ginny is right about the shape of the eyeball in myopia. But Shannon's also right that very myopic individuals are at higher risk for retinal detachment, and it has something to do with the shape of the eyeball. I assume someone on the list will be able to explain it

Yes, I know that. She does not have a strong myopia. I do and I actually have decreased my lens strength to 70% for normal everyday use.
