I don't know where you got the info that states we have too much EFA 6, as compared to EFA 3. This is totally wrong according to Prof Brian Pesko. (www.brianpeskin.com) I suggest you read his papers on his website.
We receive great amounts of EFA-3 from fish, eggs, meats, etc, and too much adulterated EFA-6 in our diet.
We need about 12:1 ratio of Omega-6 to Omega-3. Since the skin contains no Omega-3 only Omega-6, it makes sense to add Omega-6 in the case of dry skin, etc.
Gail, if you read Prof Brian Peskin's papers you will understand how we get too much EFA-3 & too little EFA-6.

I wrote a longer reply, then thought first I should check--are you
*certain* he says that we get too much of the 3s, and about the 12:1
ratio , with omega 6s in the greater proportion, being the *needed*
one? This is the proportion I have read is *common* with today's
diet, and read it as being far undersupplied with omega 3s. Can you
send me a link to where he talks about that? The only (short) article
I found attached to that page did not address the ratios.

in that field.
Oh gimme a break. He's no professor and nor has he any training at
all in the medical field. I'd lke to see proof that he even
understands what eicosanoids are about. WHat he does is invent
supplements and sell them to make money. His supposed (self-
proclaimed on his website) "accolades" as a "professor" are not that.
They are welcomes to an educational institution where he was an extra
- an "Adjunct professor" temporary position (as are 50% of USA's
teaching staff) in late 1998.
He's trying to make hay on the fact that he was appointed as an
"Adjunct professor" (meaning "extra staff" to do teaching but with
zero administrative responsibilities as a real professor has, and no
tenure) - at Texas SU for a VERY short time - starting 26 Oct 1998
and ending 1999 (date not stated). His education is in electrical
engineering from MIT in 1979 - not fatty acids or any health-related
field. So I am not surprised he did not last long even as a
gtemporary teacher in the Pharmacy department. He is currently not
on staff there of course, in any position, nor has he been since that
short time starting Oct 1998.
I dunno what makes you or he think he is an expert on any are of
fatty acids:-) He should read this and other well-conducted research

Be careful what fly by night "experts" you read about on the internet
- far better to stick to National Library of Medicine proper research
findings by real doctors and professors, who have put in their time
in the right fields, not electrical engineers pretending to be
professors after getting a part-time teaching job for one or 2
semesters a decade ago!

Even your theoretical professor agrees in his article that the
American diet is way too high in omega-6 (what he calls "essential
fatty acids" but what educated medical people call "poly unsaturated
fatty acids" or PUFAs)
When it come to skin, read *books* by someone who knows what they are
talking about - such as Dr Nicholas Perricone, who is a top
researcher in fatty acids and a dermatologist who is anti-drug and
pro good health from the inside, to develop healthy skin on the outside.
