We do not *have *to know what is behind something to prescribe - but at
the same time every little thing helps. Since most of our patients are
already under allopathic treatment and are imbued with just not just
allopathic drugs but also information it is better to have some
knowledge to address these questions- Also these items help in knowing
the natural history and prognosis of the disease. Knowing a fever is
malaria or flu or typhoid might help us in understanding the symptoms
that come up - if it is a natural progression or remedy's action and for
people who believe in giving nosodes - helps even in that...
I have already posted this incident- shall briefly describe because of
the context- One woman had intermittent fever occuring precisely on
Saturdays. Treated allopathically by other doctors for Malaria, Typhoid
and Urinary Tract infection with tons of antibiotics. I gave her Nat.mur
200 - she skipped having fever for one week but recurred the next week.
Then patient case taking revealed that the only different thing she does
on Saturday is taking a dose of Rifampicin for her Leprosy ( the
existence of this condition she had not revealed to any doctor before
due to stigma). Now Rifampicin causes a Flu like fever only if taken on
weekly dosage. Daily dosage does not cause it. Since I remembered that
fact I suggested that she stop it or make it a daily dose after asking
her dermatologist... which she did and fever stopped.
The admonition to read Aph 1 of Organon - and not try to understand the
chemistry / pathophysiology of diseases is a regressive step. Medicine
and its understanding of diseases has come a long way since the early
18th century and we are better off using anything that would better the
care of the patient. Also understanding does not mean we have to use it
in selecting the medicine itself. Knowing that insulin is one way or
other involved in diabetes does not mean we are going to give insulin
injections...
Understanding neurotransmitters and other substances could even help us
in modifying food, habits ( getting more sleep or less sleep) etc. to
address diseases.
