Organon 6 -17
§ 17 Sixth Edition
Now, as in the cure effected by the removal of the whole of the perceptible signs and symptoms of the disease the internal alteration of the vital principle to which the disease is due - consequently the whole of the disease - is at the same time removed,1 it follows that the physician has only to remove the whole of the symptoms in order, at the same time, to abrogate and annihilate the internal change, that is to say, the morbid derangement of the vital force - consequently the totality of the disease, the disease itself.2 But when the disease is annihilated the health is restored, and this is the highest, the sole aim of the physician who knows the true object of his mission, which consists not in learned - sounding prating, but in giving aid to the sick.
1 A warning dream, a superstitious fancy, or a solemn prediction that death would occur at a certain day or at a certain hour, has not unfrequently produced all the signs of commencing and increasing disease, of approaching death and death itself at the hour announced, which could not happen without the simultaneous production of the inward change (corresponding to the state observed internally); and hence in such cases all the morbid signs indicative of approaching death have frequently been dissipated by an identical cause, by some cunning deception or persuasion to a belief in the contrary, and health suddenly restored, which could not have happened without the removal, by means of this mortal remedy, of the internal and external morbid change that threatened death.
2 It is only thus that God the preserver of mankind, could reveal His wisdom and goodness in reference to the cure of the disease to which man is liable here below, by showing to the physician what he had to remove in disease in order to annihilate them and thus re-establish health. But what would we think of His wisdom and goodness if He has shrouded in mysterious obscurity that which was to be cured in diseases (as is asserted by the dominant school of medicine, which affects to possess a supernatural insight into the nature of things), and shut it up in the hidden interior, and thus rendered it impossible for man to know the malady accurately, consequently impossible for him to cure it?

Can I ask a question, why do you keep posting parts of a book the majority of us already have and read and have our own interpretations? Maybe I missed something? Thanks Kathy

Dear Kathy
Firstly there is no harm is re-reading the master's work. As Sheilagh Creasy says (who has read it cover to cover many times) every time she reads it, she learns something more. And she is a MASTER homoeopath so who am I to disagree?
Secondly, by reading the exchanges on Combos especially, I drew the conclusion that some colleagues on this list are not as familiar with the Hn's legacy as they should be. So here is the opportunity to read one aphorism at the time and ponder on it.
Lastly, obviously, if anyone thinks that they know it all and do not benefit from a re-read, there is always the delete button.

Thanks at least I understand your point of this. But honestly no two people are alike. What you find to be the “facts” are different for everyone or we would not have invented anything new in the last 200 years. Times evolve as do people and thinking. As a student of homeopathy I have watched for months the bickering that goes on and have learned only one thing that I have never in my life experienced the closed mindedness of some in this group in any healing practice. The main objective to me is to help the client. If I had not experienced firsthand the remarkable healing of homeopathy this group would surely make me think twice about studying it further. Thank goodness bloodletting and leeches were replaced. Do you not think Hahnemann would have added to his experiences and teaching had he lived longer to create a 7, 8, or 9 organon? He changed so much between 4 and 6. This is not necessarily targeted at you but in general my observations. Thanks Kathy

Dear Kathy
I think that if Hn was alive today he would have followed his experiments and may be developed the matter further.
What I object to is that if he experimented and recognised areas of failure, then we should be minded not to repeat the same mistakes.
We should learn his legacy well and then once we have become masters and found that his Org 6 is does not help us and our patients, then providing we are as good an experimenter as he was, then we can try something new.

Since this book is the foundation of our healing art, I find, personally, that each time I read it, I learn more, and learn it more in depth. I'm glad Soroush is posting it in small bits so that we can reflect on each aphorism. Also, as the group rereads the Organon aphorism by aphorism, it will serve to bond us in a common learning experience that will provide answers for some of the contentious issues that are raised.

Re: Organon 6 -17
In this aphorism and footnote, Hahnemann seems to be talking about the importance of the cause of disease as an important element in finding the means for removing illness.
Some causes, especially with acute traumas and some illnesses, are basically physical, and we know remedies that deal well with the resulting symptoms. But as Hahnemann says in Note 1, often the cause is actually on the spiritual or emotional level, especially with acute diseases. In a way, he's alluding to the central importance of what has come to be called by some the "core delusion" as the cause and therefore the solution for disease. I've become much more aware of "core delusions" and their importance by reading modern teachers like Sankaran, de Schepper, and Mangialavori, for instance, and wasn't aware of this passage in the Organon.
I've seen in the work of modern teachers some creative and apparently successful interpretations of the "delusions" rubrics from the Repertory. That's a subject on which I'd like to learn more.
Like "delusion there's someone in bed with him," for instance..... one would rarely encounter those words, although it could be a literal delusion. What else has it seemed to refer to in people's clinical experiences? (that particular one came to me immediately because I've often wondered about it, but there are many similarly obscure delusions listed.) Someone somewhere has applied "delusion cut off at the knees" to a feeling of being handicapped, leading to a prescription of Bar-c -- it makes sense.
Is there any literature analyzing a number of different delusions in terms of allegorically analogous ordinary life beliefs?

Yet he made those "mitakes" with specific examples under specific
circumstances - and the circumstances where we find ourselves now are
often different. Hn knew not to make assumptions and THAT is a mistake we
should not repeat either!
One can not extrapolate and assume for example that just becasue Hn saw
a problem with combos in one or more specific situations where he used
them, that it is always a problem in other situations too.
For example Hn did not do any experiments using lifetime-matching
constitutional-type remedy as intercurrent with simillimum remedy - so how
could we possibly asume it is wrong to use that? On the contrary - what we
see when doing that is an excellent result of cure where it does not
otherwise occur - pointing to the practise as a good one.
If anything it expands Hn's principles of only using remedies
specifically matched to the individual situation.
Namaste,
Irene
