The Heimlich

Years ago when I was a free lance writer, I wrote an early article about
the Heimlich Maneuver. Dr. Heimlich sent me a file of letters
he had received from people throughout the world about their
use of the procedure.
The letters,were fascinating because many of them included drawings in
which people tried to show Dr. Heimlich how they had applied his
maneuver in innovative ways to save their own lives when they
choked while they were alone.
There was a letter from a cowboy who was repairing fences
and choked on his lunch. He used a fence post to save himself.
Other people used mop handles with towels over them, chair
backs, bed posts, a telephone handset, and a tricycle handlebar.
However, if something gets stuck and stays in place for some time,
there is likely swelling, inflammation, irritation. Recently a female
friend went in for minor elective surgery but was coughing in such
a way that her doctor was suspicious. He found she had a piece of meat
that had been stuck for some time. She ended up having a
second emergency surgery much more serious than the first, from
which it was more difficult to recover. My own elderly mother required
an emergency surgical procedure to remove a piece of meat that I was
unable to free using the Heimlich Maneuver. Mary Jo
