Alternating actions

Post by Ardavan Shahrdar »

Dear List,

Some one asked me about the alternating actions of the
remedies. Following is my answer. Any questions?
Discussions?

Alternating actions are the opposite modalities you
can see in the proving of a remedy. For example in the
proving of Bryonia you may see some symptoms with
amelioration by motion. This is result of alternating
action of the remedy, because as you know the famous
modality of Bryonia is aggravation from motion.

The difficult point is how we differentiate between
alternating action and secondary action. If the dose
of the remedy in a proving is too large, the excessive
primary action that is induced also causes a reverse
reaction (maybe opposite modalities) which is the
excess of secondary action (a rebound phenomenon).
This excess of secondary action is seen after the
relative extinction of primary action; which means
that it always comes later. So the time of the
symptoms in a proving is valuable.

The alternating actions are common in remedies like
Ignatia, Bryonia, Rhus-t and Belladonna.

In these remedies always one side of their alternating
actions is more common. For example < motion in Bry.
We also usually prescribe on this part. If by chance
in a prescription the exact alternating action is
excited, it acts as completely the opposite state that
we expect and so cannot act homoeopathically. In this
situation we should prescribe again the same remedy in
after for example 24 hour. This prescription can act
as a correct homoeopathic effect (If by chance the
first situation does not repeat!)

In these repetitions, you can prescribe the same
potency. Because you haven't received any curative
action from your remedy. It acts like a fresh
prescription.

Example: You prescribe Bryonia 30c for a patient with
a typical Bryonia headache. After some hours you see
no improvement in his headache. This does not
necessarily means that your selection of remedy or its
dose and potency is wrong. Repeat that Bry 30c. Now it
can act as a nice homoeopathic prescription.

Wish you the best,

Ardavan
