a beautiful cure
Dear All,
Just thought I'd share this one with you. We see a lot of cases of epilepsy. And often once the person has been on a lifetime of anti-epileptic drugs, it's so much more difficult to cure. This is one case we caught early, and I'm so glad.
Shall I tell you the story and leave it to you to provide the explanation & remedy?
------
Mosei, a teenage boy, with his father came to see me from a village where we had recently conducted a mobile clinic. They arrived to the mobile too late, so they came up to Nairobi for treatment.
The boy had an unusual kind of "epilepsy". It took but a few directed questions to uncover the story, but after that it was clear sailing towards the cure.
About a year back the boy, staying at a boarding school, got malaria. The school nurse gave him some malaria medicine. He felt better and returned to school after a few days.
Then without warning, he blacked out, stiffened and fell down (more like catalepsy rather than epilepsy). Limbs stiff, eyes staring. No tremors, no foaming, none of the typical epilepsy symptoms one would expect. There are many details to the fit itself, but in fact, they are unnecessary to this analysis.
The second time it happened the school put him in the hospital on a malaria drug drip and called his father. Since then, he goes into a fit without warning, without any aura. The doctors put him on anti-epilepsy drugs. He's had to drop out of school because his mind has become dull. In fact his whole future is now threatened because he can't go to school.
There was one unusual feature to his fits. When I asked the father, how often does it occur?, he said "On the 3rd and 17th of every month". (I have never come across such a clear periodicity!!!) It happens that like clockwork every 14-16 days he will have that fit.
In the last two months, the nature of the cateleptic fit has changed: he has started shaking, has become more violent and angry afterwards.
Three doses (1 dose for 3 days) of ___________ cured once and for all.
Any explanation for all the curious facts of the case?

Re: a beautiful cure
Certainly is beautiful
I would only hazard a guess at Nux vomica or Cuprum with the poisoning
and suppression of malaria with allopathic drugs. But periodicity in
epilepsy is often associated with the phases of the moon and for women
this would included the menses as well, so you will see Kali brom,
Oenanthe, China, Lachesis, Cedron, Arsenicum for example and many
other rx have this periodicity. Thanks for sharing Didi. Best wishes, Joy

I also would guess nux-v, tho it's not under "periodic, every 14 days"
(closest rubric I could find). But it is under "periodic", and it's
one of only two rubrics under "Catalepsy with stiffness" (nux-v and
camph). Is the shaking during the fit, or after?
Thanks for this!

Re: a beautiful cure
Possible that the 'being away from home - away at boarding school'
contributed to the condition - in which case that would be a SRP sx to
use - then maybe Phos-ac or especially Helleborus, which has a lot of
dullness, staring, does have periodicity, they become suddenly
unconscious. Joy

Re: a beautiful cure
From Boericke:
"A dose of Chininum Sulphuricum in high potency sometimes arouses suppressed malaria and brings back the paroxysm. Aside from its undoubted influence over malaria, it is indicated homeopathically whenever there is marked periiodicity..."
The explanation for the peculiar symptom of exact periodicity possibly lies in the fact that the convulsive disorder must be etiologically connected to the uncured malaria, mother, as it were, of all periodic disease symptoms.
That's my best guess...Regards,

Re: a beautiful cure
Dear Didi - Excellent results - well done.
Taking:
GENERALS - PERIODICITY - week - two weeks; every
GENERALS - CONVULSIONS - anger; after - epileptic convulsions
Leaves only Calc.

Re: a beautiful cure
I'd read that rubric as meaning that the convulsions follow after
anger, whereas this seems to be the reverse?

Re: a beautiful cure
Didi,
Wonderful cure! I'm going to venture Sepia, as I see it in
Lilientahl for periodic epilepsy and it has also 14 to 16 days.

Hi Didi
Great work that you are doing.
The remedy I would have given is Bifo.

Sorry
A bit of Bifo would not have helped.
My remedy suggestion should have read "Bufo"
