polycystic kidneys

Post by VR VR »

Possible new patient in his mid 20s, suffering from polycystic kidney disease. The kidneys are a regular size but polycystic. It's genetic through mother, he's one of six and all the kids have it. He was OK till early 20s, when he developed kidney stones and high blood pressure - not astronomical but high enough to cause concern because of the kidney situation, around 150/110 at highest reading. He's been on BP medicine since then (4 years). About 6 months ago, he started developing stomach problems. Every few days or weeks, he gets very bad stomach pain, has diarrhea that does not relieve the pain. The diarrhea can drive him out of bed, and then he's weak and has to stay in bed. He says he feels something is stretching and pulling inside. He's had all tests - invasive and less so - and the conventional diagnosis is irritable bowel syndrome. There is no clear exciting cause, although I've recommended that he try to think whether something emotional could have
triggered the stomach problem.
What's a realistic expectation of homeopathic treatment for such a patient? Is there any possibility that homeopathy could help the kidney situation? He says he has tried acupuncture in the past, but it did not help.
As always - any input appreciated!
Vera

As with cystic fibrosis or any other hereditary disease, you'll be able to help with the patient's quality of life but not save his kidneys. He will eventually need a kidney transplant.

I don't know about the polycystic kidneys but you should be able to help him with the diarrhoea symptoms for a start. If this is what he comes to see you for and this is the condition which is causing him the most stress at the moment then this is what you should concentrate on to begin with.

Hi Vera-
The IBS could have been triggered because of the allopathic BP
medicines as well.

I have treated high BP and high urea values in a renal cyst case with
Lachesis with excellent control of both BP and urea levels. The
medicine was arrived at using the presenting symptoms and the latest
symptom. I was not able to get the patient consent for a repeat test
to look at the kidneys but could confirm that the BP and Urea levels
became normal...

Since even after diarrhea the pain still remains- why don't you start
off with Nux vom itself? Probably Sulphur ( anti-psoric) as well to start?

We do not know the full potential of homeopathy. So we need not try to
guess the effectiveness of homeopathy upfront based on diagnosis.
Diagnosis helps in knowing about possible mechanisms, possible course
of disease and prognosis with allopathy. To a certain extent helps in
picking even homeopathic medicines-

You can probably explain things to the patient. Since people can have
cysts and never know them, as long as you give homeopathy and can
prevent the case from worsening and going to chronic renal failure
you are doing OK.
What would happen to the cysts I do not know.

Try to rep the case with the latest symptoms and select a set of
remedies..

Try to rep the whole case and see what medicines come up.

You might get some understanding about the possible medicines
comparing this group.

What was the composition of the stones? Was there any hematuria? Any
pain with the stones? What kind of pains then?

Any leading symptoms before the allopathic medicines for BP were started?

Since this runs in the family - what about symptoms in others?

Whether the parents anticipated this problem for him and so when did
he first know that he also had it? Was it a routine exam or due to any
symptom? What were the symptoms with all his problems. Lots of BP
patients ( and diabetes patients) know when their values are not
controlled. Ask him if there is some indication in him that tells him
that- ( giddiness for example)...
