Seizure activity

Post by dusty1197 »

Hi All,

Is anyone familiar with epilepsy and seizures in general and who can
tell me whether or not the following description sounds similar to
petit mal or other seizure activity?

A sensation of electricity spontaneously coursing through the brain,
producing an electrical "discharge" that travels quickly down through
the body and out to the extremities, during which few seconds'
duration, a sound of buzzing is heard in the head, and only the head
trembles, with a tensing of the neck and shoulders. There is no loss
of consciousness. The "episodes" come on only at night in bed,
sometimes in clusters and while the person is fully awake, but also
often disturb sleep, while not always bringing the person to complete
rousal from sleep, yet with awareness of the activity. At times,
there exist, in relative proximity (i.e. the night before or after,
or
the same night, but not necessarily at the same moment as
the "electrical" activity) olfactory hallucinations of something
sweet
that has been burnt. In addition, there is sometimes rapid eye
movement and what is described as rapid-fire images, like fast-motion
projector slides (one image after another, "snapshots" quickly
flashing in and out of "view"), which appear to the person in
exquisite detail while the eyes are closed.

I'm not terribly familiar with the manifestations of epilepsy/seizure
disorders, and most of my experience treating cases that involve
olfactory hallucinations is in the area of psychoses. I wonder if
anyone can relate the above description to seizure activity or
possibly some differentials (i.e. anxiety disorders, alcohol
withdrawal, etc.)

Toni

Could well be petit mal, somewhat atypical, but essential to get a
differential dx to check for other brain abnormalities or other
causative factors (these could be revealed through case taking). Best
wishes, Joy
