Nux vomica--other pictures?

Post by Shannon M »

I keep seeing nux-v in rubrics that seem so different from the picture
that I have learned. E.g., describing the "usual" picture, this from
Morrison:

"The Nux Vomica patient is impatient, competitive and ambitious. The
major focus of his life is on work and achievement. He is confident and
even arrogant. The patient is compulsive with his work and in all
aspects of his life, even to the point of fastidious cleanliness and
ordering of his house or office."

But in looking thru rubrics, I see it in e.g.:
MIND; ABRUPT; affectionate, yet (4) *
MIND; ABSENT-MINDEDNESS (208) **
MIND; ABSENT-MINDEDNESS; spoken to, when (5) *
MIND; ABSORBED, buried in thought; general (101) **
MIND; ABSTRACTION of mind (73) *
MIND; AFFECTIONATE (45) **
MIND; ANXIETY; others, for (34) **
MIND; ANXIETY; conscience, of (99) **
MIND; SYMPATHETIC, compassionate (61) **
MIND; SYMPATHETIC, compassionate; children; in (16) **
MIND; TIMIDITY (159) **
MIND; TIMIDITY; fear, with (2) **
MIND; WEARY of life (99) **
MIND; YIELDING disposition (32) **

Have any of you successfully used nux-v for cases that did *not* fit
the image of "impatient, competitive and ambitious", etc.? I would
love to hear thoughts and comments.
Thanks,
Shannon

Actually this is what is often referred to as compensation factors and
you see it a lot with many if not all rx and certainly one such as Nux
vomica. Also, because Nux vomica is a rx of extremes then you are even
more likely to see these conditions you mention - causation being
'ailments from' any of the extremes, e.g. the mind has become so
overactive that an absent mindedness takes over; being absorbed is part
of the over active mind, they are totally gone into whatever it is they
are working with.

Keynote of Nux vomia is A/F disappointment and they know what this is
all about and can recognise it in others = sympathetic or anxiety for
others.

If the shock of disappointment is so strong this can set up a fear of
it happening again = timidity

When the mind has become so overactive they are about to burst there is
strong desire for calm and peace, tranquility in Nux vomica = yielding
or weary of life.

So yes you do see all of these types but with the case taking you will
also uncover the more familiar nux vomica type. Best wishes, Joy

Additionally, you need to consider that a great dis-service has been done to
paint a 'character' picture because it can be so limiting.

Nux-v is also in MILDNESS!

Please note that for every remedy we have a spectrum going from the extremes
of health to ill health.

Just try and compare a healthy Phos with one who is seriously ill.

Dear Soroush, I don't think it is as simple as that otherwise every rx
would be in the 'mildness' rubric - there has to be a reason for the
mildness within the spectrum (as you call it), of the diseased state
because we don't prescribe on so called healthy sx - if it is
classified as a symptom then that is already moving away from health.

I agree there are degrees within the sx picture of every rx where sx
are either extremely serious at one end or relatively mild at the
other, and at the mild point there might even be a fusion of good
health and the beginnings of a diseased state but outside of that there
is no such thing as a 'healthy phosphorus'. Best wishes, Joy

So the mild and sympathetic expressions would be in context of earlier
or elsewhere-expressed ambitiousness etc., and if you don't see that in
the past or elsewhere, then nux-v would drop off the radar, is that
what you're saying?
Thanks!

Thanks Soroush,
Yes, that's what I'm looking for, a view of what/whether the "other
extreme" might be. Joy's explanation of "compensation" certainly makes
sense, yet I've also become very aware of what you've described as the
disservice of "character" pictures. If anyone can give case examples
of where nux was useful in an un-nux-like picture, I would love to
hear!

Or maybe "healthy phosphorus" would be e.g. where Eizayaga might
prescribe it as a preventative--his use of the word
"constitutional"--the tendencies are there, but not to a degree
inconsistent with health.

Hi Joy,

I wouldn't just say compensation factors, because that makes them second
best symptoms, no solid symptoms to base a repertorization upon.
I would say "Polarity of symptoms", because a remedy uses characteristics
that are already present in the constitution, but the disease state
exaggerates them. So in a mild person the Nux-v archetype will be expressed
in a different way compared to in a case of a choleric person. The symptom
picture is also depending of the disease phase within the same remedy and
the nature of the surroundings, such as culture etc.
Caterina Coulter describes such a mild and yielding Nuv-v. It is also
possible to find an irritable Pulsatilla etc.
It is always good to look further then the stereotype picture to the primary
state were these secondary symptoms (expressions) come from.

Kind regards, Piet

Dear Piet, I agree we shouldn't be too stereotypical about remedies,
although it is a good place to start and someone in a nux vomica state
will try to find some compensation in the struggle to retain some level
of health and in fact will demand it to such an extent that those sx
too become part of what needs to be cured - so that is why I prefer the
'compensation' idea rather than polarity, because polarity suggests
automatic opposites which isn't always the case - subtle difference I
suppose. Best wishes, Joy
