A subject we all have to address many times in practice. There
is the idealistic way of looking at it and there is the practical
reality. The ideal is that we should be able to get our patient to a
point whereby they can live in harmony with their environment
and not have to avoid things that make them sick. Yes, but.....its
about degree. In practice you will find trying to cure severe
allergy while someone is exposed to their allergens practically
impossible. Mild hayfever yes, severe sensitivity no. There is a
threshold beyond which it is foolish to expect expect a
homeopathic remedy to counter the effects of a continual harmful
influence, even if it is only harmful to an individual. In those
circumstances it is necessary to remove whatever external factor
the system is not coping with while the susceptibility is being
treated. I am stating the obvious really but I think many
homeopaths let their idealism get in the way here. Surely you
would not tell someone who goes into anyphylactic shock from
eating nuts to carry on eating nuts while you treat them? It
applies to susceptibilty to infection by pathogens too. The
virulence of the pathogen has to be taken into account and not
just the susceptibilty of the patient.

Examples of emotional suceptibilty and maintaining cause
illustrate the point very clearly too. We would happily treat a child
who over reacts to teasing comments in the playground but if the
child is being severley beaten by bullies we would not expect a
remedy to be enough to help them cope with that. They need to
get out of the situation or the maintaning cause needs to be
removed. There is a bigger question of why the person is
attracting such treatment but we cant expect to understand or
see meaning in everything.

Even mild allergies are much more easily treated while the
mainting cause is removed. When I first started treating eczema I
scoffed at practitioners who insisted on changing infants diets. I
was as idealistic a homeopath as they come. It took me a while
to admit that treating an eczematous infant with a milk allergy, or
even sensitivity without getting them off milk was not a sensible
approach. It doesnt only apply to allergies - ever tried treating a
Rhus tox or Nat sulph or Dulcamara patient who lives in a damp
basement?

As I said, stating the obvious.

PS the subject of what would happen if we removed all possible
illness causing influences from a persons life is an interesting
one. My observation is that without treatment, sensitivity/
susceptibility increases and health does not improve.
Something to discuss another time.

Ah, the perfection of it all. Perhaps that exalted state could be used to
cure all the ills of the world. You certainly would have your work cut out
for you. LOL
