Dear Joy

I 100% agree with you that we should be doing more acute work - but unless
we can position ourselves outside A&E or even just inside it and grab people
as they come by, there is VERY little chance of doing acute work on scale of
the infected leg or the belly we have just be discussing.

Perhaps we all should serve time under supervision in one of the Indian
hospitals.

Well there is lots we could do. if you live close to another homeopath
you could get together and use some of your clinic hours for drop in
acute cases or make yourself available to visit people at home if they
are too ill to come to you or make a big thing of this is your hand out
practice information "bring me your acute cases" etc. Go talk to your
local GP's and make some kind of alliance with them.

How about treating women and children in transition homes? The women are often battered and suffer from traumas, the chidren are scared and suffer trauma and shock. Transitions homes are by definition not advertised in the Yellow Pages because they are safe places for women and children, but once trust is gained with the organizers, it will be a great place to heal a sector of the population that is often marginalised due to their state.

Hello all,
One of the biggest issues about being "allowed" to do acutes with
underserved populations such as people in transitional housing, battered women's
shelters, the homeless, etc. is that we as homeopaths are also marginalized. Those
populations often only want the "free" welfare services, don't want to or
aren't able to do any type of follow-up, and they have to be sold on the idea
of something that doesn't come from the doctor and/or the pharmacy.
In order to do that type of work, you will need to have very good liability
insurance. The last thing you need is to be sued by someone you treated for
free. And most agencies such as the shelters, etc. wouldn't even consider
letting us at their clients unless the insurance coverage is in place.
In my small town in western Wisconsin I advertise acute care, with walk-in
hours of 4-6 p.m. three days a week. I've had a few people come in and have
had some nice successes.
On the other hand, I do a lot of acute prescribing over the phone to current
patients. That is a lot easier because I already know these people so
finding their acute remedy is more straightforward.

The best way to get experience with acutes is to treat friends and
family, and emphasize to patients that you *want* them to call you
first for acutes of any significance. (But, only if you *do*! )

Where / how do you advertise your walk-in service, and can you say a
bit about who comes and what happens?

Quite agree but a lesser aslternative is to do what I did 12 years ago.
When I first qualified I set up a table at a local weekend bric a brac
fair with a collegue and having gained the confidence of the locals
with free consultations & prescriptions we were assigned a room after 2
years. We saw a constant stream of acutes of increasing variety and
eventually became the first port of call for many. Also at that time I
would do house visits for acutes. Simply being hungry for experience
will motivate one to find the outlet.

Shannon,
right now I advertise my acute clinic by talking about what I do at my
classes, hand out flyers about my acute clinic at networking meetings and chamber
of commerce meetings, give away coupons for free acute consults when asked to
provide a donation for a charity. I'm probably going to buy radio spots
where the DJ and I chat for several minutes once or twice a week and I'll be
sure to focus on the acute work during those spots.
Local chiropractors and the local midwife send people to me for acute as
well as constitutional work because they've seen what homeopathy can do to the
patients we share.
I have an ad in my local food co-op newsletter that mentions my acute clinic.
So there are lots of ways to get the word out.
I've not found that print ads work, having spent many hundreds of dollars on
them with NO results.
The personal touch, whether it is with classes, Simon's idea of setting up a
table at a flea market, farmer's market, craft fair,
or with a radio ad, is the most important thing. People want to know that
you are "safe", not going to wave crystals and do too far out stuff on them.
So presenting as very mainstream is also important.
