Stem cell research, according to my opinion, is one step ahead towards the Frankensteinisation of man. Modern science has always tried to skirt the questions of ethics in their mad rush to control nature. Medical science is no exception.
I had read an article in the Prabuddha Bharata on stem cell research but I could not locate it. (Maybe it had been published in Vedanta Kesari?) However the following links containing articles by Most Revered Swami Jitatmanandaji Maharaj deals with the need for a scientific ethics very well. There is also an editorial article on human cloning and its repurcussions.

The very erudite articles of this book, by reputed persons in the field of medicine, both mainstream and alternate, and also by monks of the Ramakrishna Order will open your eyes to the concept of holistic healing.
A man is just not an assemblage of organs or cells as modern medical science would have us believe. Hinduism mentions five sheaths; vital, physical, mental, emotional and spiritual, all of which have to be taken into consideration to tackle disease and create the field for total health. Unfortunately modern medicine, and its followers, consider this approach to be unscientific. No wonder they have to fall back upon atrocious concepts like genetic manipulation, cloning and stem cell research.
The legendary Helen Keller was once asked about her opinion on the worst crime on earth. She had replied, "To have eyes and not to see." Persons who blindly advocate and perpretate modern medicine for its short term "benefits" commit this very heinous crime.

ITs great to get a Non-Christian Voice and opinion about Stem Cell
research.
Most of the time, today, it seems like only Certain Christian Gorups
and the Catholic Church have a problems with it - they are the people
with limited insight and old/retarded ideas....
Recently I read an article about the various different methods (at
least 4 ways) that Stem Cell research could be carried out and one
(more difficult, and hence unexplored) process that could
be 'Spiritually' acceptable - IF used solely for the purpose of
healing of diseases.

Dear Sister Joyoti,
Namaskar. I fully sympathise with you and your plight as I too have gone through a lot of suffering in life. Only I found out that it was modern science that had led me to a state of limbo and made me face death for seventeen long years. It was an extremely horrid time I assure you.
When I decided to go off drugs and search for alternate methods of healing I was termed a lunatic by everyone and my doctors washed their hands off me, probably with relief, as they could do little to help. I was suffering from multiple sclerosis, suicidal depression, mood swings/disorders, panic disorder, intractable insomnia, asthma, irritable bowel and an ischaemic heart. Quite a mouthful don't you think? Today I am leading a near normal life and even trying to reach out to help others. My erstwhile allopathic doctors look at me with awe surprised that I was able to pull out of that crisis. All this was thanks to a homoeopath who still treats me on the net.
The problems I am left with now are a result of nearly 30 years of using allopathic drugs. This condition is known as iatrogenic illness (I hope I have got the term right) and is the name given to illnesses resulting from side effects of allopathic drugs, injections and vaccinations. But I am still fighting and Sri Ramakrishna willing I will be out of the woods.
Today it is widely recognised that many of the chronic diseases we all suffer from today are a result of allopathic intervention. I have given this example before but I give it again now;
Imagine the body to be a very delicate and costly machine. To save it from harm and ensure that it runs smoothly the maker has installed some in built warning signals; a red lamp that blinks, a siren, a delicate fuse and so on. This machine falls into the hands of an untrained mechanic. When the machine developes an internal error, the red light blinks. The mechanic hammers the light so that it stops blinking. When the siren wails, he shuts it out. And when the delicate fuse blows off he replaces it with a heavy duty one. The defective machine still goes on working and the mechanic is happy that he has "fixed" the problem. Then one day the machine splutters and dies out. The mechanic is surprised that "in spite of the best care" the machine has failed.
Allopathy, or modern medicine, tries to suppress symptoms without going to the root cause of the disease. When the symptoms are suppressed the body continues to work but the person feels very uneasy. The doctor assures him that everything is all right as he displays no symptoms. Ultimately the patient comes down with diseases such as diabetes, cancer, immune deficiency etc which have no cure in allopathy. So the scientists start tinkering ever more with genes, stem cells not knowing that even those attempts will bring only temporary relief and lead the patient to even greater agony.
These are only the physical side effects of suppression. The mental agony the patient faces can only be known by the sufferer (like you and me). The law of cure is within outward as the body, or the vital force (prana) always tries to throw the disease out. Suppression drives the disease deep into the body affecting the internal organs and the mind. Today the very immune system is at risk as evident by the rising cases of AIDS, Tuberculosis etc. Mentally too depression, insomnia, inability to handle stress, suicidal tendencies, irrational and intemperate behaviour are very commonplace in todays world serviced by scientific medicine.
Modern medicine follows the reductionist system dividing the physical body into its constituent parts or cells. In the process it loses sight of the patient. The cardiologist is very happy to replace a valve, the oncologist feels great satisfaction in removing a cancerous growth, the endocrinologist keeps blood sugar at bay with insulin all without observing the patient as a whole or whether they are contributing towards a cure. They are more interested in "disease management" as they have come to realise that allopathic principles do not hold out hopes of a cure. When the patient ultimately breathes his last they assure the relatives that they "have done their best". They are too short sighted to notice the agony of the patient or study the long term effects of their treatment. They declare war on the body without trying to help the person involved. Modern medicine has become like fast food, very easy to cook, good to eat but dangerous for health.
Today a parallel movement, which already exists, is drawing the attention of patients with seemingly incurable diseases. These methods like yoga, ayurveda, homoeopathy, naturopathy treats the patient and not just the disease. The miracles are there for all to see and even the allopaths acknowledge the benefits. Appolo group of Hospitals, super speciality hospitals in India, now refer incurable patients often in their last stages, to these doctors. I have personally seen the prescription of a terminal cancer patient containing the remarks, "Refered to homoeopathy". These hospitals are now opening alternate medicine departments and appointing yoga trainers. Recently the Mumbai Municipality have opened ayurvedic clinics at all of its 164 hospitals in Mumbai. Conscientious allopaths, Dr Deepak Chopra, MD, to name one, are denouncing further "advances" and reputed oncologists are studying the role of karma in disease. The Govt of India is waking up and sprucing up its ayurvedic and
homoeopathy medical colleges. It has recently announced the opening of 14 new ayurvedic colleges all over India. The outlay for alternative medicine research has been increased manifold and a Council for Alternative Medicine has been formed.
Human disease is now no longer being seen as a local individualised physical malady alone. Not only are the mental, emotional, spiritual and social aspects being studied but even the inter relationship of human disease on environment and other species is being studied with great interest. This system is being termed eco-medicine where methods by which nature and all its inhabitants can live in harmony and thus eradicate disease both at the micro and macro level are being studied. This study holds great hope and has already noted the effects of human illness on society and environment whereby a vicious cycle has been formed.
I wish to end with the words of Hahnemann, "Cure is restoring a person his former state of health both mental and physical, by assisting nature and based on methods that are fully comprehensible and easily understood."
So Joyoti, the fight against modern medicine is not a fight of religion against science but a fight between science and an anomaly that tries to project itself as a science.
