Re: Baby with severe reflux
Rochelle,
I have always believed that the pain of reflux is from the effect of the
acids on the lining of the esophagus. This leads to esophagitis, which can
be painful. This is a common problem in premmie babies, but also in full
terms. When adults have this problem, it is advised that they don't lie down
after eating, which is common sense - so, the problem may be relieved or
prevented by being placed in a slanted position even when sleeping even if
the baby has to sleep in the baby carrier or seat for the car.
The arching of the back (opisthotonos) is the reaction to the pain.
I would be looking for rems that will assist in the healing of the
inflammation in the esophagus eg., Ars alb 3 has shown to be of use here,
and this rem also covers pain in the epigastrium after eating. Clinical
notes show that in very acute cases, 2 drops in some water given half an
hour before every meal helps the situation but otherwise twice a day.
Dios and Nux are often indicated when the pain in the abdomen is accompanied
by the arching of the back, and this may not be the problem this baby has.
Apparently, reflux is common but as the digestive system matures, the
problem goes away. Until then, upright position and reduction of the
inflammation causing the pain would be my suggestion.
If it isn't inflammation causing the pain, but instead colic, then rems for
spasms like Cham etc... will help.
Best

Thanks Robyn for this useful information. As the osteopath reported this child likes movement so Ars may well be indicated. I have Ars 6 in a MP so I could make up a liquid potency with that if I think it is indicated.

Hi Rochelle,
I don't mean to butt in here,
my experience with those youngens who are not breast fed do very well jon
Goat's milk as it isvery digestable and very close in composition to
mothers's milk. I haven't seen allergy nor digestive upset with goat's
milk, in fact those who produce allergy symptoms to formula get great relief
from being fed goats milk.
it is worth a try.

Re: Baby with severe reflux
fennel is actually specific for colic, and conventional fennel is "gripe
water" but a tsp of fennel tea or apply a warm cloth soaked in fennel tea
applied to the tummy , relieves some of the most stubborn colic. and is the
mom burping the baby well enough after feeding??

Rochelle,
I would recommend that you try Natrum Phos 6X, 10 tabs dissolved in 1 or 2 oz dropper bottle, use often esp 15-20 min before meals and after meals, and PRN. Then as Sx's get better, go to Bioplasma (which is all 12 cell salts together) to help the child's system get rid of all the toxic materials this foolish mother has given the child.

I like the idea of Mag Phos and wonder about the tissue salt. Thanks for your thoughts. I will see what turns up during the consultation. What do you reckon on stopping the medication? I asked Mum if she thought it had made any difference. She reckoned at 30%. I really don't think he needs the Domperidone though and it will be interesting to see if a day without it makes any appreciable difference. Why do doctors prescribe medication that clearly says not suitable for children, let alone babies? (frustrated sigh!!)

Hi Rochelle,

My thought too. Having said that, there is usually some kind of
vomiting showing up by his age (heavier than 'posseting' but in
my experience it is not always projectile). Also, how was the
birth ? Was there some cranial irritation also (forceps, long
labour, etc., birth weight - over 9lbs, etc.). But with the time
modality and the screaming (arching back) etc, I was thinking of
Chamomilla like Robyn.

Ho Brenda
Have you any idea how to dilute it as this child is only 10 weeks old. Is there a goats milk formula?
