Hi Sheri,

I definitely agree with you that the right remedy is way better than these
other things we've suggested! But at the same time, having personally been
thru *looooong* periods (with myself, my daughter and my mother) where that
"right remedy" has been maddenly elusive, it's also useful to have back-up
ideas. When one *knows* of factors that might be involved, is it wrong to
share them? (Keeping in mind, of course, that it's not quite on-topic and
detailed discussions are better done off-list.)

No, but it sounded like from the post that this was a response to, that all
you had to do was relax.

And that is what I was responding too. I hear this kind of advice far too
often.
And when personally going through this, maybe it helped some, but nothing
like the cure.
And when I was trying to 'figure out' everything - magnesium, calcium,
adrenals and on and on........it really helped nothing.
The remedy was the ONLY thing that worked. And like he says in Aphorism 1
- we are only deluding ourselves if we think we can figure it out. So, I
keep coming back to the remedy.

And that is what this post was responding to......

For acute episodes, I have found the best temporary treatment to be
Rescue Remedy mixed in the same bottle with Acon, taken PRN.

The cases of anxiety disorders I've treated have taken considerable
time to fully resolve, with slow improvement along the way.
Discovering that which is overwhelming the person is paramount,
though it may not necessarily be a single stressor, but rather a
concept, such as fearing the future and all that that might involve
(ending up alone, suffering poor health, poverty, etc).

Since panic attacks can occur at any time, it's sometimes not useful
to try and use whatever event was occuring at the time of the
attack, but to simply treat the acute. The underlying impetus is
always a deep fear and/or delusion. A good case-taking will reveal
a pattern of fears and anxieties, pointing to the right remedy.

Some patients suffer a generalized free-floating anxiety nearly
every minute of every day and can no longer identify what started
it. Other patients know what their triggers are (traffic, crowds,
long lines, high-pressure multi-tasking, etc.), but the triggers
don't necessarily lead to the remedy, though they may suggest the
underlying theme, *if* the homeopath digs deeply enough.

Case in point: I had a middle-age woman with generalized anxiety and
who suffered full-blown panic attacks usually in the kitchen and at
the grocery store. Probing revealed that she was extremely fearful
of losing a family member and, as a result, spent an inordinate
amount of time preparing nothing but healthy meals and snacks,
shopping for the best, organic ingredients, buying supplements,
spending a fortune, and devoting herself to keeping her family
healthy. The kitchen and the grocery store represented the two
places where she placed the most demands on herself relative to
warding off loss of loved ones. In addition, the store is where she
had to shell out all the money she spent on the process. Naturally,
there are no rubrics on panicking in the kitchen or grocery store,
but the theme of anxiety over the health of family and the money she
was spending are what ultimately led to the rx.

I suspect that this advice is meant for use during the acute
episodes, as controlling hyperventilation is important. Combined
with RR/Acon, it works pretty well in the moment. But getting to
the root of the derangement requires the simillimum.

I agree. This was just a very simple description of the mechanism. I would
be searching for the appropriate remedy for this patient too. And yes, you
are correct most of the psychological "tools" do not offer extensive relief.
Relaxation of the muscle groups allows the body to return to stasis was, again,
just a simple example. This is why the diazepams were the darling drugs of
psychiatry for a long while.

If palpitations are a major 'symptom' of an anxiety atack it may be worth
looking at the TMJ, Temporal mandibular joint - The jaw joint.
The Vegas nerve controls the heart and many other organs and travels very
close to the TMJ. Problems here can directly cause palpitations, with the
anxiety being a symptom of the palpitations, not the other way round. If the
patient has any clicking or pain in the jaw, history of injury or lots of dental
work, or the need to clench their teeth to get any strength in their muscles,
think about adressing it, with remedies (cocculus can be very effective),or
co-operating with a good dentist using Occlusal splints(like a gum shield) or
some form of bodywork. The Bowen technique or NST are particularly good with
TMJ problems.

Michael Nixon Livvy who owns the NST site suplies an excelent Occlusal
splint called a T4u which is moulded to fit in boiling water
