The Great Lakes region is known as the "goiter belt" owing to the high
incidence of thyroid problems there.

Actually, the great lakes region was ONCE known as the goiter belt (about
100 years ago, or so).
This is no longer the case, and the incidence of goiter or thyroid
dysfunction of any kind is about the same in this area as anywhere else.
I believe the deficiency was in iodiine...which became added to salt to
address the problem in the great lakes area decades ago.
