I believe the sponges recommended are the natural sea sponge variety. This is fascinating as they sell Neem here (in Australia) as a wonderful natural insect repellent for plants. Isn't nature wonderful.

Neem (azadiracta indica) is already a hom drug and
used in febrile conditions. Dr Bose ( I think) proved
it. Neem oil is used for ages in South India as insect
repellant since it sterilises them. The tender leaves
of neem if taken continuously will render a person
sterile. Same for ocimum sanctum. They both are
excellent antiseptics at crude levels. In temples(
especially vaishnavite) ocimum leaves immersed in
water is given as holy water. This is probably to wean
away the man from basal desires.
