unusual responsibility
Hi group,
Today my business friend, 40, from Delhi visited me. I know him as a
person who puts money over men and makes no pretence of being
otherwise. He always seems to be on the nervy edge always ready to
snap. The laugh is even tense. His reactions from the moment of
seeing me to the moment he left was to take note of all my
possessions from the car to the bathroom fitting. The curiosity was
too visible and culminated in his asking how much money I make.
As we talked, I learnt that he had diabetes and was on insulin twice
a day. I offered my help in treatment and wanted to know when it
started. He said it started when he was 26 years old. I had noticed
during lunch that he was eating salt literally from the plate and
drank a lot of water. His symptoms were too suppressed by drugs that
he was normal in urination. Had a pot belly. I suddenly said, 'if I
know your mind probably I may help". This was the starting point. He
immediately told me " I will tell you how it all began". He was 26
when he was working under a boss. When the boss was suddenly
relieved, the whole responsibility ( he used exactly the word
responsibility) fell on him. He could not stand the burden and simply
wilted. Depressed to the point of committing suicide. Then there was
intervention from the family and left the job. Immediately diagnosed
for sugar in blood and branded a diabetic.
At this point Rajan Sankaran's case flashed in my mind. He was
quoting Phatak's materia medica for this rubric- Unusual
responsiblity agg. The only remedy was aurum met. Though Nat mur
seemed suited to the present situation( he loved being in the cold)
I simply gave him aur met 30 and 200 and asked to take in sequence.
It is a running case and the group is asked to comment. I will post
progress as and when reported. He already had one dose of 30 and I
have asked him to take three doses in 30c in three weeks.
Regards
J.Venkatasubramanian

Hi Venkat,
Did you look at Aurum Mur.Nat if you feel that there are elements of both minerals? It doesn't just have to be a female Rx. I have to say that with what you describe I would have gone with what I saw in front of me right now - possibly the Nat Mur and maybe the Aurum is a deeper layer.

Re: unusual responsibility
Dear Venkat, you asked for comments so I have a few.
Thanks for sharing the case.
If the case began with such a heavy burden of responsibility, what was so
unusual about it? Many of us fight shy of responsibility, even in a healthy
state, and there is nothing too wrong with this, until it becomes
inappropriate and creates a diseased state.
Certainly Aurum has a desire for wealth and possessions - vis his curiosity
about your own, and being GOLD, he would have been driven to achieve such a
high status an would feel a failure if he did not do so. This, failure =
suicide - total worthlessness.
But, in Aurum, this sense of failure is a last resort, coming long after
intense industry, great sense of duty, strong sense of right and wrong,
expecting high standards of the self and others, often choosing a religion
to support this - this is 'unusual responsibility'.
Aurum is a syphilitic remedy, destructive, and the sense of responsibility
is carried through to the suicide - they mean it, and do it!
But I get the feeling from what you write that this person was unable to
deal with any kind of responsibility - it weakened him profoundly but he was
able to escape but perhaps still felt a failure because of this.
I wasn't entirely sure about the affinity with Aurum and diabetes, but Gold
effects every organ. The pathology usually begins with a dissatisfaction
about their life but they cannot express this, in fact they often stop
talking altogether until finally nothing motivates them or excites them.
Pathology is usually a round the heart, caries of bones, ulcerations,
cancers.
But I was struck with his curiosity about your own possessions and status of
wealth etc. Why was this do you think? Was it due to jealousy, fear of
poverty, the need to be better than others, concern about his own social
status or ??
There are a number of remedies which have problems with the concept of
responsibility:-
Calc, Carc, Lyc, Sil, Fl-ac, Med, Phos
If the need for fresh cool air and craving for salt are added (+ diabetes +
issues around wealth + nervous/agitated) the case seems to move more towards
Calc, Phos and Med.
Phos dreams of money - Calc and Phos have imaginations of wealth - Calc
talks of money, even steals it - Medorrhinum is extravagant, fixed and fears
misfortune, egotistical and full of self esteem which is why they cannot
deal with responsibility because it will ultimately question that position
of status. For me the first rx I think of when it comes to problems of
dealing with responsibility.
But... if he is doing well on Aurum then that is what counts and I/we look
forward to a progress report.

Re: unusual responsibility
Hi joy,
You have done an unusual analysis. Thanks. I forgot to tell the group
some thing more
1. He had a child hood exactly conditioned by his mother ( carc)He
cofessed of not having disobeyed her. Even now he said he is attached
more to his father.Even ahead of his wife and child. The order of
affection he gave was Father, Mother, Wife, and child. I got this
verified twice.
2. Even today his depression attacks him whenever "his bread and
butter is threatened" he used another sentence " whenever someone
offered the products which I sell at lower price". His reaction to
such a threat would be to become taciturn, go into a corner.( nat
mur, Cocc)
3. I asked him who his friends were: the names he told were all
business associares( this was as much amusing for him as well as me).
I have the private comments of the said 'friend' that this man
desires nothing but money.
4. I have seen himplaying bhajans ( sort of a chorus- equivalent to
the church choir- in his car whenever he travels- which is all he
does in his sales business. In my house he prayed in front of each
image of god and his prostration was very pronounced. ( he bent too
forward).Sankaran has verified this religiousness and the curious
affinity to the bhajans in Aurum patients.
To be frank, after seeing your analysis,I feel giddy. It was an
impulsive prescription. But I still feel worth a try.

Re: unusual responsibility
Dear Venkat, I have known Aurum adolescents and young adults to be very
attached to a parent - i.e. they bring a parent with them to the consult
even though they are old enough not to - one, I remember, had a porsche,
loved fast cars (another sx of Aurum), but came with his mother and she had
to tell his story!!
Carcinosin also will present like this. Fl-ac, another big rx for not
dealing with responsibility, also loves to stare at others - this is usually
a sexual aspect but it could be applied to possessions as well. Sounds an
interesting case.
best wishes, Joy
