Dear all,

I have been musing on an idea I thought I might try and establish next year
if enough people are interested.

You probably know that so called video conferencing is now a very popular
communication tool and Macintosh have developed a system called i-sight
which is basically video conferencing for the masses (as Steve Jobs called
it). PC's have their own version.

All you need is the software which is basically a web cam and a microphone
if not already installed in your computer. The software works out at about
$150 or less at present and Mac are boasting tremendous quality. You need to
be on broadband and have a computer that is working on 600 megahertz, i.e.
G3 or G4 or PC equivalent.

Compatibility needs to be checked though, if not good at the moment it would
have to be Mac to Mac or PC to PC.

I thought this might be a great way for small groups of us (at any one time)
to connect with each other, both visually and audibly, to discuss our cases,
remedies, philosophy, case taking etc as though we are in the same room
together.

As far as cases are concerned it would allow for more privacy as people will
have to have a known user ID and confidentiality will be secure.

Sessions (dates and times) and subject matter to discuss can be pre-arranged
and can last as long as they need to. For those who have free internet
access these sessions would cost nothing either.

I think it could be fun and a quality extension to what we are already doing
here.

If there is enough feedback I would certainly be interested. I originally
wanted to do this as an attachment to my website - "online clinics" - but
would just as gladly be involved with it on Minutus. It doesn't need myself
to get this going, anyone can do it, as long as there is a group that wants
to communicate.

Any ideas or comments?

all Mac users or all PC users? If so, am I right in assuming that the
software the "makes a Mac run like a PC" so that a Mac can use PC software
would enable a Mac to join in a PC conference (with PC software)?

And does "broadband" refer to the high-speed phone connection, or the kind
thru TV cable, or something else? (Sorry, I've been happily resisting
learning this stuff!)

working with PC (I am on Mac) and I should have said 'high speed' connection
(we call it broadband in Britain). Here it is coming down in price and
provides a much better service all round and soon, I imagine, it will be the
only way to connect, but for the time being....

Likewise with higher speed computers - slower and older versions go out of
date so quickly and I am guessing that many of us would have or soon will
have better and faster computers out of necessity.

But there is no pressure here, it is an idea that will evolve over time.

As a cheaper and immediate alternative, can't we
create a chat forum and gather there on a particular
time ? Any dial up connection can handle chat. It is a
lively one and though not equivalent of a video con
still will do for most.
