Reassuring a Patient

Post by Rosemary Hyde »

A number of issues arise when treating cancer patients homeopathically. One of the most distressing effects of doing this is dealing with the failure of the oncologists to acknowledge that homeopathic treatment is a real treatment and can have a positive effect.

One patient I'm treating, with Stage IV breast cancer although no current evidence of disease, has been using Dr. Ramakrishnan's plussing method for over a year. This treatment seems to have been remarkably effective in forestalling the onset of symptoms from the cancer, although a source of anxiety is that the cancer marker keeps rising, despite homeopathic healing signals galore. This patient is extremely well-informed, and is also a retired allopathic physician who chose homeopathy because it offered some hope whereas there is no allopathic treatment capable of prolonging life at this point.

Because of the rising marker, the patient's oncologist, at the most recent visit, painted a dire scenario of what's about to happen with the cancer, based on her assumption that no treatment is taking place, and recommended that the patient start a form of chemotherapy. This treatment has a moderate (about 20%) likelihood of delaying onset of symptoms, but no power to prolong the patient's life. The likelihood of debilitating side-effects is relatively high (over 50%). Homeopathy offers better odds, actually, and the patient's quality of life at the moment is fine, which probably would no longer be true once she starts this treatment. She fears that if she does not comply with the oncologist's wishes, the oncologist will "fire" her as a patient, for being noncompliant, and then she will feel even more alone and forsaken regarding support from health providers. Her homeopath has been Dr. Ramakrishnan, whom she has seen several times during his visits to the US, but who will not be back in this country for several months, and who is planning to take time off from his practice -- another reason for feeling left alone.

The basic problem is that the patient feels all alone -- deserted -- in terms of health care support, and desires and needs confirmation that it makes sense to continue to hope in homeopathy's effectiveness, as a balancing force against the oncologist's assurance about the disease's imminent threat to her.

It's not an unreasonable feeling. She is pretty much alone, among her family, former colleagues, old friends, in having foregone medical treatment in favor of homeopathy. She has participated in an "alternative" cancer support group, but there, too, only one or two other patients are familiar with homeopathy, and the theme of the group is anger at allopathic physicians, which also affects her personally.

We were wondering if members of Minutus who may have had successful experiences treating cancer patients homeopathically might be willing to share those experiences with this patient (an d with the group), to build a stock of case histories for evidence that homeopathy is indeed worth remaining confident about, when it comes to treating cancer patients.

The patient is anxious, and requires support and consolation. I'm sure there are other homeopathic patients out there with a similar disposition. I'd be happy to set up and moderate an online discussion group for such patients, if two or three people tell me that could be of interest to a patient or patients of theirs. Meantime, this patient would much appreciate hearing directly from any homeopaths who can provide her some reassurance about keeping on with the homeopathic treatment. Her email address is scheiner@pipeline.com. Her name is Ellen.

Dear Rosemary,
The best thing for your patient to do is to seek a local homeopath - yourself?- from whom she can continue Dr R's protocol. I have done his cancer seminar and he talked time and time again about patient who still had a tumour present BUT were carrying on with their lives and the tumour was not getting any bigger or smaller. he believes that they become encapsulated and therefore will not cause harm to the body. I do also think she needs a remedy to sort out her understandable anxiety and she could have this and continue Dr R's regime.

Tell her also to go to www.emofree.com and read the case histories of cancer patients who have used Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) to help their anxieties.

All the best
Rochelle (RSHom and also a Meridian Therapist)
