Cardiospermum halicacabum. Balloon vine. N.O. Sapindaceae.
"As a member of the tropical Sapindaceae family, the climbing plant Cardiospermum halicacabum is to be found in India, Africa and Southern America. In ethno-medicine Cardiospermum extract is used for the systemic treatment of squamous dermatosis, constipation, respiratory tract diseases, and rheumatism, whereas modern homoeopathy usually recommends the topical application in eczematous disorders.
The main compounds of the extract identified thus far are triterpeneglycosides, tannins, alkaloids, pentacyclic triterpenes and flavonoids as well as considerable amounts of phytosterols like sitosterol, camposterol and stigmasterol are considered to be responsible for the anti-eczematous effects of Cardiospermum." [Niederle]
Cardiospermum owes its name to the fact that the pea-sized, blackish-brown seeds [sperm = seed] have a characteristic heart-shaped ['cardio'] spot. The seeds themselves are also heart-shaped. The fruits are green and inflated like little balloons. Hence its English name 'Love-in-a-Puff.'
In Indian folk medicine, the plant is used to promote menstruation in delayed or lack of menses and to stimulate labour pains.
The Sapindaceae family consists of about 134 genera of trees, shrubs and climbers, usually with pinnate leaves that occur almost exclusively in the tropics and subtropics. Latex or resin is often present. A related family that used to be classified with the Sapindaceae are the Hippocastanaceae [including Aesculus].
Proved in 1988 by Stübler on 33 physicians, and in 1994 by Riley on 22 persons [4 men, 18 women; 2 received placebo].
