My dear colleagues
Some remedies have opposite symptoms at the same time in one single proving.
Just like having impotency symptom and at the same time too much erection….
Thirst and thirstless…. What is this? Please elaborate… How the proving was
done?

Opposites are just two sides of the same coin. In the examples you gave, you
could call the "coins" sexual function and fluid requirement. Symptoms of
either excess or deficiency indicate that the issue is out of balance. Since
homeostasis is all about maintaining balance (or, more correctly, dynamic
equilibrium) it's helpful to think of opposing symptoms in these terms
rather than seeing them as somehow mutually exclusive.
I've found that when you find opposite symptoms in a proving, quite often
the underlying issue keys into fairly central themes within the remedy.

Re: opposite symptoms
i was always taught that every remedy has opposites in it.
i think of the issue as reactions represent a continuum. so
the thread, for example, may have to do with thirst and you
get thirst and thirstless. you see this in proving all the time

Re: opposite symptoms
Another way of looking at it is to see each remedy as a cycle, with the various symptoms stages in that cycle (or segments, as Paul Herscu calls them). In this way, a hot and heavy sex life can be one stage, but later, as exhaustion and depletion take over, impotence supervenes. In other words, as Herscu would explain it, the organism is stressed, which induces a response, but because the organism is out of balance (i.e., sick), the response overshoots the mark and creates a rebound effect. As the organism gets sicker, the stages of the cycle --and the oscillation between them -- become more dramatic.
It's difficult to make sense of the many contradictory symptoms that appear in remedies, but I found visualizing them as parts of a cycle (polar opposites in most cases) makes it easier to understand.
Peace,
Cinnabar
