Calendula (hot and cold)

Post by Joy Lucas »

Dear Rochelle,

I don't understand why say that Calendula doesn't really have a mental and
emotional picture.

Calendula is one of our most soothing and comforting remedies and the people
who need deeply comforting and soothing are those who are equally deeply
depressed - which is the starting point for understanding the mental and
emotional picture of Calendula.

"Pain is excessive and out of all proportion" so the MM's say - so you can
picture someone who is almost hysterical with the pain, who cannot tolerate
being hurt, so very sensitive to pain whether it be mental, physical or
emotional.

They are also extremely anxious, restless and nervous people. Easily
startled and frightened. Their hearing is very acute and sensitive so even
the slightest noise can startle them - they hear and sense everything
acutely.

Irritability is another strong emotion - it comes down again to this
extreme, 'out of proportion' sensitivity. It gets to be too much to bear so
an outburst of irritation sort of transfers the sensation elsewhere.

Being a Heliotrope, always moving with the sun, you san see how they are
relieved from this sensitivity by walking around a lot - again it distracts.
They are also so much <<< for damp and cloudy weather when they can't see
the light.

And let's remember that Calendula is a big cancer remedy - and perhaps
people with cancer are the ones who need soothing and comforting the most.
Often used as an inter-current during cancer it can and does bring enormous
relief.

It is well known for its physical soothing properties. As cream or as mother
tincture in warm water and applied generously it can bring immediate relief
to cuts, wounds, lacerations, burns, traumas, etc. And in relation to your
case it does have that very important but peculiar hot and cold sensation
which Shannon pointed out and also suppurating buboes/abscesses in the
axillary glands.

Best wishes, Joy

It has been demonstrated that nerve tissue differentiate inaccordance with
their capacitance. This then is determinative as to clinical
manifestations, both of a sensorial nature and motor control. Calendula
appears to reflect itself best in that tissue which is of low capacitance,
the inability to store energy, ergo a demonstrative result to stimulation as
in the remedy, or as a MT to irritate.

The provings bear out the fuller reflection of its profile.

Dear Joy,
You wrote:-

I know of it only as a healing remedy on the physical side. I have looked at
a few MM since your post and about the best I can find from Clarke is

Great irritability; easily frightened; hearing acute.
Intense depression.

I was not aware of the emotional side of this remedy so thank you for
bringing it to my notice. However with this I would also expect a physical
wound to repair. From what you have written it sounds similar to Cham and
Coffea. Could you differentiate between these and Calendula.

Re the patient - I have just spoken to her Mum and yesterday she went into
school bright and early and today was suffering from muscle ache from all
the netball she played enabling her team at this new school to win for the
first time ever. This will have boosted her confidence no end and stop the
racist bullying. Re the abscesses in the groin. The huge one has discharged
become small and is releasing clear serous liquid now. Let's just hope that
this young suicidal girl is now on the mend. She has lots of issues and
problems yet to sort as I am working on the top level and what needs to be
cured first. Mum was telling me that her knee, where she was run over years
ago is swollen with fluid today. This is probably from all the netball she
played yesterday but hopefully homeopathy will sort that out in the future.

Regards
Rochelle

Dear Rochelle,

The 'wounding' of Calendula can be on level - mental, physical or emotional
and we need to extend our idea of 'wounded' to accomodate this as you could
also do with the 'bruising' of Arnica and Bellis - it doesn't have to be
JUST physical.

All 3 remedies (Calendula, Chamomilla and Coffea) have great sensitivity to
pain as you mention. I would say that Chamomilla is more spiteful and angry
with the irritability and that with Coffea ALL the senses are so exalted and
the irritability is accompanied with extreme restlessness, busyness, very
industrious and will thus lead them to be totally exhausted and often full
or remorse because they haven't fulfilled a particular project, and you
might encounter them, as clients, in either stage.

But we need to follow a case through to help us distinguish between one
remedy and another and often it will be on the physical symptom picture that
we can differentiate.

Calendula has an affinity to muscles, spine, liver, skin and uterus and so
we would expect this susceptibility to be present (and it is always >>
warmth). Chamomilla has affinity to the teeth, liver, brain (convulsions),
uterus, sleep and is always <<< warmth, so you would expect a representation
of characteristic sx along these lines. I mention these temperature
modalities because I consider them to be important in these remedies. And
Coffea, stimulant that it is, will have an affinity to the whole nervous
system, so prominent sx will include convulsions, sleep problems, in fact
painfullness of any part affected.

Sorry this is brief but I hope it suffices.

Best wishes, Joy

PS Out of interest what did you prescribe for your client - can you share it
with us?
