re: using charcoal as a preservative:

Hahnemann often used just water, with a piece of charcoal on a thread from the lid to act as preservative (he mentions this in The Organon; (para. 248 footnote) remove the charcoal before succussing
also page 156(my edition) in The Chronic Diseases.
