I will have cataract surgery next year. If there are no unexpected happenings, I would expect remedies from the list below to be the most likely substitutes for antibiotics.
Eyes; inflammation; injuries, after:
ACON apis ARN bell bry calad CALC CALEN canth coch EUPHR FERR-P grin HAM HEP led merc NIT-AC PETR PULS RHUS-T RUTA SIL STAPH SUL-AC SULPH symph
Calendula would be my first choice. Allen liked it following eye surgery calling it "almost a specific for clean cut wounds."
I am guessing that I will have no control of antibiotics given during surgery. So, I will be given a packet of antibiotics after the surgery and simply will not take them after I get home. The entire procedure will probably take several hours in total.
Probably I should look for some probiotics.
I know many people would take arnica before the surgery. Vithoulkas says not to take it before because it promotes bleeding. Many swear by arnica for prepping for surgery. What do you think about preparation?
Sul-ac and Hep both follow well after calendula. If the eye gets painful and there are suppurations, perhaps think Hep. If the tissues are livid, think Sul-ac.
Problem is I suspect that the eye will be tightly bandaged and I don't know if I would have the guts to take off the bandage. If I can't look at the eye myself, I will have a hard time judging. My personal sense is wounds heal better when exposed to air. Of course avoid dirty air.
I have a machine that vibrates muscles to loosen them. When I apply it to the neck under the ear, I feel pain in the ear area and in the outer neck lymph nodes under the ear. I think this is the left over inflammation from excess antibiotics as a child. I have been using remedies for years to heal it, but the healing is incomplete. This seems fairly distant from the eye, so I hope it is unconnected.
Seasons Greetings,
Ellen Madono

Re: remedy instead of antibiotics
Here is the "protocol" (you know how much I dislike this concept) for my own surgery.
I did not use preop Arnica, as there was very little risk of bleeding and haematoma. Otherwise in other tissues and for other surgeries I would.
Here goes:
As soon as awake, one dose of Phosphorus 200 (what I had in my drawers) to accelerate liver clearance of the anaesthesia; then all in Plasma Potencies 3 to 34C, in that order:
Arnica, one dose
Symphytum, one dose
Staphysagria, one dose
If pain when moving the eye under the bandage: Bryonia
If swelling of the cornea or conjunctiva, after removing the bandage the same evening: Guarea and Hepar Sulf.
First surgery, that was all I needed. Second eye, apparently there were residues and swelling inside the capsular lens at the evening check-up, so I took Guarea every 15-30 minutes during the evening before sleep and Senega same way; on waking up next morning, clear vision.
Check the MM of the remedies, this will explain the why of each one. I did not need any painkiller, but conformed with the local drops of antibiotics for one week and steroid for one month.
Good luck and Happy New Year to all.

Think have to wait and prescribe on whole picture.
My daughter yesterday with severe sunburn responded neither to Cantharis or Apis but this am on looking at rubric in Ref works chose Capsicum . I had wanted to use it on her for a long time as so peppery, never liked things to change at home as a child and gets flushed cheeks. Offering of remedies to family sometimes fraught . Anyhow told me a while ago is better, Best Wishes to all and may the Universe help the power of Homeopathy to be appreciated Jean

Hi Ellen ...
I had laser cataract surgery last August after procrastinating for several years. I had used remedy Thiosinaminum for many months daily & believe it helped to halt & minimize the smaller cataract in the other eye, as well as reduce some scar tissue on my foot. I ran out of the remedy and the cataract in my right eye grew rapidly. Finally realized I had no vision in that eye. They said it was a really thick huge cataract.
I hate medical procedures & totally dreaded eye surgery. It turned out to be a really smooth procedure!
The surgery was over in minutes. They implanted a new lens. There was no bandaging - just instructed to wear dark sunglasses -which I slept in for 2 nights to protect my eye. I was able to see from the eye the same day as surgery and everything looked so much brighter. My eye never looked red. Had some large floaters which disappeared within about a week. I slept a lot for the first day or two which helped the eye to rest & heal. Even now, 4+ months later, am amazed at how bright things look from that eye, and how dim from the other eye. Prior to surgery I was given the option for a prescription for antibiotics - pills I'd have to take multiple times daily for about 10 days after surgery. The other option was a shot at the time of surgery with no further dosing. The technician sold me on that, as they felt it better prevented infection. (I felt safer with the shot which did not mess up my digestive flora.) The only thing I took prior to surgery was some Bach Rescue Remedy. Went back day after for post op exam, and again the following week. Never had to use the drops they gave me in case of irritation. I made my own drops of calendula, hypericum & euphrasia & only used them a few times as I had no discomfort.
I wish I'd had the surgery earlier! Amazing to see clearly from that eye! My surgeon had done over 80,000 cataract procedures. He told me to expect to see some spots on my new "windshield" a few months after surgery, and I'd need to come back for a quick laser procedure to clean off the residue that forms when white blood cells come because of the new 'foreign object' & adhere to the lens. I plan to do that after the holidays and don't feel any anxiety about it. Looking forward to even better vision.
Choose your surgeon carefully.
Regarding your concerns of too many antibiotics in your past, I relate. Several years ago before learning about homeopathy, I had a life threatening infection & was on daily IV antibiotics for over 3 months. My homeopath suggested using milk thistle, dandelion & probiotics daily for cleansing and turmeric (curcumin) for inflammation.
Best of luck & healing to you, Ellen!

Re: remedy instead of antibiotics
An 80 year old man I am treating for a variety of problems had severe cataracts in both eyes and was having to consider surgery. While in Costa Rica he learned from one of the people in a macrobiotica there (health food store) that there was a certain type of honey that one could put in the eyes to leave overnight which would clear cataracts. He said it was called "Maria Seca" which means "dry Mary". I do not know if this honey is available in other parts of the world but one could search for it. If I can find more information on it I will post it.
In any case, after doing this nightly and leaving it in the eyes while he slept for 3 months, his cataracts had shrunken by 50% and after 6 months they were completely gone. He said that he could only use a drop rubbed along the edge of the eyelid because it burns a lot if there is more in the eye.
Honey is known to have lots of antioxidants and bioflavonoids which can vary from species to species. http://www.tandfonline.com/doi/abs/10.3 ... .1.51.1.04
He says that this particular type of honey was sold to him as the one that would clear his cataracts so it may be that it is richer in antioxidants than other varieties. It also may be that other types of honey will work also but I
do not know the answer to that definitively. If anyone has questions I will try to find the answers for you.
I am only reporting what he has told me. If anyone is interested in trying this, please do your own research first.

Yes, indeed, but when you are self-prescribing, do not have a colleague handy to take your case, know all the complications that can happen and are terrified the way I was (I am am a nightmare of a patient, as expected), creating a set of guidelines you can hang on to is pretty comforting and helpful.

Allen,
I found this if you read Spanish. Looks like substantial research.
