I have a question on arthritis and rheumatism.
Can an elderly patient with a possible arthritic and or rheumatic condition experience aching and pains, including soreness and stiffness in the thighs and hip area after physical work or exercise. The pain that is described seems to be much like those aches and pains of a younger person who had overworked themselves in a sporting event when not in condition? Even though pain can often be felt in adjacent areas to the real problem as well at the site of the problem, in this case there seems to be no pain associated with the hip joint itself.
When at rest these pains essentially subside, but will to a lesser degree reappear upon movement fading as they day goes on. Also is there also a way to differentiate, without X-rays, the difference between Arthritis and Rheumatism?
thks
Bob

Yes, Polymyositis, Polymyalgia Rheumatica are muscular tissue pathologies that often leave the bones and joints intact.
All connective tissues pathologies can also give the same picture.
Arthritis and Rheumatism: different labels for the same thing.

Yes, the pain can be referred via affected nerves or nerve sheath or muscle sheath or other inflammatory processes.
For example my friend with Lupus has all kinds of leg pains in the thighs, partly due to old back injuries from falling off horses hence referred pains from the spine area and nerves emanating from there, and partly from nerve and muscle inflammation locally in the muscles. She has days on which she can do nothing but hang out in bed and read books etc.
They are confused and/or used as substitutes, it is better to find out what exactly is going on where.
From the medical dictionary:
rheumatism
[roo´mah-tizm]
popular but indefinite term for any of a variety of disorders marked by inflammation, degeneration, or metabolic derangement of connective tissue structures (especially jointsand related structures), with pain, stiffness, or limitation of motion; it includes such disordersas arthritis , osteoarthritis , bursitis , and sciatica .
desert rheumatism the primary form of coccidioidomycosis .
muscular rheumatism fibrositis .
palindromic rheumatism repeated attacks of arthritis and periarthritis without fever andwithout causing irreversible joint changes.
Arthriitis covers many diseases, but some differentiate osteoarthritis as specificlly to fo with bone involvement such as the bone spurs in osteoarthritic knees, and call arthritis rheumatoid arthritis when there are no bone deformitine in the joints.
But medical dictionary def:
arthritis
[ahr-thri´tis] (pl. arthri´tides)
inflammation of a joint. adj., adj arthrit´ic. The term is often used by the public to indicate anydisease involving pain or stiffness of the musculoskeletal system. Arthritis is not a single disease, but a group of over 100 diseases that cause pain and limit movement.

At times it did seem as though they were different labels for the same thing, but again with all the sub layer terminology the lines between the definitions become somewhat blurred. Thanks, you have help clear the air on this for me.

Please also check whether the patient consumes any aspartame in any shape of form.
Do not forget as well as in things like diet Coke etc and many chewing gums and almost anything that says SUGAR-FREE or REDUCED-SUGAR, it is in many medicines both prescription and OTC.
