Profiles in courage

Editorial, April 2011

Dr. Andrew Wakefield first came to public attention, when he declared there was a connection between vaccines and autism. This was an unpopular view in the British medical establishment. Through relentless attacks with lies and half truths, they managed to end his career in the UK, eventually banning him from practice.

Having been barred from practicing his profession, ostracized by his peers, threatened by the government and defamed in the press, would he surrender? I wondered how Dr. Wakefield would fare, since that kind of treatment has destroyed some good people over the years. Not so Dr. Wakefield. Since he could no longer practice in the UK, he moved to the United States and continued to express his views. During a television interview he described the ban on his practicing as “a little bump in the road”, and vowed to continue his research into vaccines and autism.

Referring to the parents of the vaccine injured children he said: “These parents are not going away, the children are not going away, and I am most certainly not going away.”

Live long and prosper Dr. Wakefield.
